When Afaf Saleh began working as a public health nurse for the City of Bloomington in 2021, she held a bachelor’s degree and experience as a nurse in a neurology intensive care unit. She was already a regular visitor to Bloomington, having friends and family here and as a member of the Dar Al Farooq Mosque.

“I love this community,” Saleh said. “I meet so many wonderful people. I get to learn new cultures and contribute by providing health education and resources.”

Seeing the impact of her work inspires Saleh. “There are legitimate reasons for not being able to access health care, such as transportation, and public health nurses work to reach those individuals one person at a time,” she said.
