Start with Hi!

Bloomington, MN —Bloomington Public Health is excited to announce the launch of the "Start with Hi!" campaign, a public awareness initiative aimed at increasing social connection across Bloomington, Edina and Richfield, the three cities it serves. The event will take place on Wednesday, November 20, 4-7 p.m., at the Minnesota Masonic Heritage Center, 11411 Masonic Drive. Join us at the kickoff for meaningful connections, music, group activities, a light dinner and more.

The “Start with Hi!” campaign was created in response to growing concerns about mental health, loneliness and isolation, both locally and nationally.

In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General declared loneliness and isolation an epidemic, citing research that shows these conditions carry the same risks of premature death as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. On a positive note, strong social connections—whether with family, friends or the community—are linked to improved health outcomes, better stress management and even better academic performance for children.

The "Start with Hi!" campaign supports the City’s mission to build a remarkable community where people want to be, one where people feel welcomed, valued and connected. By fostering a sense of belonging, the campaign aligns with the City's strategic goals to improve both individual and community health.

Local statistics underscore the need for this initiative. More than 30% of adults in the Bloomington, Edina and Richfield area report experiencing loneliness or isolation, while 20% of 9th and 11th graders have missed school due to feelings of sadness, anxiety or stress. In response, Bloomington Public Health has made mental health a priority in its strategic planning and community health assessment.

"Start with Hi!" aims to address these concerns by bringing people together for fun, engaging events across the three cities. The first of many planned activities will offer opportunities for residents to laugh, play and connect in a supportive environment.

“Join us as we work together to create a community where everyone feels like they belong,” Public Health Administrator Nick Kelley said.
