Bloomington’s Public Health Division has commissioned a COVID-19 memorial art sculpture, with Creative Placemaking supporting their artist selection and engagement process. The artists have conceptualized a metallic quilt that is intended to honor the lives lost to COVID, allow for reflection on this time in history, and serve as a testament to the resiliency of the City’s residents and employees through the pandemic. Artists Aaron Squadroni and Leah Yellowbird invite Bloomington community members to participate in the creation of sculpture elements.

The Project

Participants will start with a metal triangle shape that represents a small part of the overall quilt pattern. Attendees will imprint organic materials (flowers, leaves, seeds) into the shapes in a way that best defines the person they wish to honor. For the design imagery, the artists chose plants in many stages to represent nature’s cycles of renewal. After the organic shapes are laid out on the triangles, the artists will imprint them into the metal with a rolling mill. After the imprint is complete, participants can add the initials of the person they are honoring to their triangle.
