A burned-out headlight, broken taillight or turn signal can mean choosing between an auto repair or buying groceries for your family. It can also spark a downward economic spiral that could lead to multiple tickets, or negative interactions with law enforcement. The Lights On! program disrupts that downward spiral and builds goodwill between the Bloomington Police Department and the community we serve. Thanks to MicroGrants, Lights On! has partners with BPD and other law enforcement agencies to help improve police-community relations and public safety. Rather than writing a ticket, Bloomington Police Officers can provide a voucher for a free car bulb replacement at a participating local auto repair shop, turning a traffic stop into a positive exchange. Safter roads, and improved police – community relations are just the start to the many benefits of the Lights On! program.
