Creative Placemaking and Parks and Recreation partnered to develop a new South Loop Community Garden. The site includes plots, benches, a picnic table, native landscaping, an artful shading structure, and cyanotype banners by artists Sheila Novak and Erin Genia. 

The South Loop Community Garden opening celebration will take place on Saturday, June 29 from 1-4 pm (rain date on Sunday, June 30). Participants are encouraged to walk/bike. Free parking is located in the Hometown Church parking lot off of E 88th Street.

There will be indigenous fare available from Pow Wow Grounds, free paletas from Valentina’s Michoacana (while supplies last), a cyanotype workshop station, ecological restoration tours, music, and more!

Schedule:

  • 1:00 - 1:30 & 3:30 - 4:00: Long Hollow drum circle
  • Live music from Alto Designó 
  • 20 minute Make Your Own Cyanotype workshops offered throughout the event. Family friendly activity, non-toxic and safe for all ages. Choose to leave your completed cyanotype on display or take it home with you. 
  • Throughout the event, meet Park Ranger Lucia Portillo-Maldonado from the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, and join her for a tree cookie painting activity (non-edible) & making pinwheels.
  • 10-15 minute ecological restoration tours offered every 30 minutes. Learn about the process of habitat restoration from Landbridge Ecological staff.
