Ice Harvest Festival
at Richardson Nature Center

8737 East Bush lake Road, Bloomington
11a.m. - 3 p.m.

Cost: $5 per person, ages 3 and older.

Drop in any time and discover Minnesota's history before electric refrigerators, when hardy ice harvesters sawed massive blocks of ice out of frozen lakes and ponds to keep food chilled during warmer months.

Walk on the frozen Turtle Basking Pond and help cut ice blocks using vintage ice saws with ice harvesting historian Tim Graf and costumed interpreters from the Landing - Minnesota River Heritage Park. Pull an antique ice plow, weigh blocks of ice, use chipping tools and make ice cubes, try out a kick sled, and peer into fish house where staff uses tools to determine water quality. Make sure to catch the live ice rescue demonstrations from Bloomington Fire and Rescue. Keep warm outdoors by a campfire or go indoors for hot cocoa and a film of actual ice harvesting in the 1900s.

This is a great event for families, grandparents, and people interested in Minnesota's ice harvesting history. Adults must accompany all children. 20% discount for groups of four or more.

For more information, call Richardson Nature Center at 763-694-7676.
